How to Draw a Rose – Drawing Roses from Life

In this “How to Draw a Rose” lesson there will be five roses in total.
The drawing begins with the preliminary sketch. The good thing about a preliminary sketch is it does not require high precision.
Achieving a precise likeness when drawing roses is not as important as when drawing a portrait, for example.
When considering How to Draw a Rose from the beginning, first, I mark up with straight lines, the outmost edges of the future drawing.
This polygonal shape will contain the drawing of roses within. By looking at live roses, I find the outermost points of the composition and connect those points with lines.
These are imaginary lines that will be erased later on.
When it comes to the task of “How to Draw a Rose”, keep in mind that the rose petals are rounded and curved.
Rose petals, in fact, are modified leaves that are colored in red or pink, for example. There are green leaves between flowers. Rose leaves have an ovoid shape with one end more pointed than another; this shape also can be called “ovate”. Rose leaves have small teeth, so it also can be called “toothed ovate”.

The whorl of the rose petals wraps around each other forming a nice looking corolla.
Under the petals there are sepals that enclose the petals; they are green and leaf-like.
Drawing from nature is considered to be the best exercise fine artists can have.
Making a series of short and fast drawings and sketches will train your eye and hand.
So next time when you think ‘How to Draw a Rose’ it will be easier for you to depict flowers.
It is like making gesture drawings – drawing fast while capturing the most important features of the roses.
