What is the purpose of Art?

What is the purpose of Art?

Question from Yasmin, Drawing Academy graduate

I am 24 years old. Since I was a child, I’ve dreamed of becoming a fine artist and used every resource at my disposal to become good at it. But recently I have started to question myself about why I’m doing this and I’m losing my motivation. I’ve had the opportunity to see the works of many amazing artists and I am absolutely humbled and intimidated by their work. What if I can never be as good as they are? There are so many great works out there, why should anyone pay attention to mine? And in this day and age, when the art world is ruled by big names and brands, is there any place left for newbies?

Having all these questions in my head is scaring me because art has always been a very big part of me and I don’t want to lose it.

Looking forward to your answer! Thank you in advance!

Yasmin

Feedback from Vladimir, Drawing Academy Tutor

Hi Yasmin,

Many thanks for sharing your thoughts.

To answer, I have to ask a question back – “What is the purpose of life?”

To me, the purpose of art is to portray the purpose and beauty of life.

To clarify your thoughts, put in writing your Vision, Purpose and Mission.

Hi Jasmin, I agree with Florescu and would like to add a little more thoughts. I am nearly 60 and still pursuing my dreams of being a fine artist, I may not be famous, or made it big, however, I have been painting since a child too, and when I look back through my life now, the most important thing to me is the sheer joy of being creative no matter what others say. Creativity is so important to life itself. Who knows? Practice is the key! With lot’s of practice you may become famous. Some great painters became famous only after they passed from this life, mainly because they left behind their own vision, experience and feeling of the world through their creative expression. Keep creating art Jasmin, the answer to your question is not to ask questions and keep on doing! You never know where it will lead to!! Most of all enjoy it!
