Innocence at its best

My name is Mahlet Birhanu Gebre, I was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia Growing up, I was blessed with a caring family. My late father, Birhanu Gebre, was a professional painter and he has especially encouraged me to explore art after observing my talent in drawing at an early age. As a child, I grew up surrounded by art materials and I believe it’s this early exposure that has facilitated my interest to be engaged in arts soon.

Apart from my academic studies at school, I have always enjoyed participating in sketching and painting activities. Along with studying Psychology at Addis Ababa University, I was enrolled at Enlightment Art Academy, a private art school in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. I am currently pursuing my Master’s education at University of Bergen in Norway. I consider myself as a self-taught artist with some knowledge gained from Art academies. Although I am not a full time artist, a typical day for me would always involve having my pencils in my hands.

Most of my works are influenced by beauty, color, women, and traditional Ethiopian hand woven clothes. I describe my works as a blend of fashion and art. In addition, I draw portraits of people and still life paintings. At last, I can simply say my soul is immersed into arts and hope to share more of my works with you soon.

I believe my passion for arts and the fact that I have been practicing it from childhood will make me a suitable candidate to win “how to draw”.
