Creative Guidelines

Questions from Patrícia

Which are the most important guidelines, within the creative process, to achieve a meaningful, emotional original artwork?

Your website is really good. Do you have a “social media network” where people (art lovers) could share ideas, doubts, knowings about art and drawing? Also would be interesting to have a bit about history of art.

Feedback from Vladimir London, Drawing Academy Tutor

Dear Patrícia,

Many thanks for your review of the DrawingAcademy.com website.

I think you have several questions in one, asking about “creative guidelines, within the creative process, to achieve a meaningful, emotional original artwork“.

1. How do you make meaningful art?

First and most importantly, you need to have something to say that comes from your life and your individual sense of purpose. Clarity is the key: if you have a clear vision, purpose, and mission in life, then you can communicate your thoughts and ideas meaningfully using the non-verbal medium of visual art.

2. How do you make emotional art?

Every work of art is inherently emotional. If something is produced through some emotionless, mechanical process, then it is not art. Every piece should also aspire to evoke some degree of emotion from its viewers. This emotion will derive partly from WHAT you have to say in your artwork and partly from HOW you’re saying it. The ‘WHAT’ represents your personal worldview; the ‘HOW’ depends on your artistic skills and techniques.

3. How do you make original art?

As long as you do not copy someone else art, your artwork will be original. Originality is a “sub-product” of two previous points.

4. Are there creative guidelines to making fine art?

Making art is just another non-verbal means of communication. I believe that every person has the ability to become skilled in this ‘language.’ In fact, I feel that the world would be a much better place if people were not handicapped by a lack of drawing skills. To illustrate this point, I will give you an example – just imagine that for some reason, only an elect few decided to learn how to speak. Everyone else could only listen. That’s exactly what is happening in the modern world – only some people learn a critical means of communication: how to draw.

Let’s rephrase your question in terms of verbal language: “Which are the most important guidelines, within the process of talking, to achieve meaningful, emotional original sentences?” I think you see my point; the creation of beauty and meaning cannot be boiled down to a simple checklist.

To produce even the most rudimentary of sentences, you need to know vocabulary and grammar, to practice the language on a daily basis, read books, practice writing on your own, talk to people, and so on.

The same goes for art. You must know how to draw, develop your taste in art through cultural education, acquire the necessary knowledge and experience in drawing and painting techniques, and practice art daily.

Emotion and meaning come from within; the technical aspect of drawing can be learned in the Drawing Academy course. We teach drawing techniques that will enable you to draw whatever you see, think, or imagine. The course is quite comprehensive, yet very friendly. Even a complete beginner can build solid drawing skills by following this course.

The basics are so important in every craft. It is amazing that some think drawing and painting can be an exclusion.
