There, Back, Again! An Obsession, a Life Passion

Artwork by Alessandra FryzelI’m originally from Italy, a country that has some of the most amazing Art and Architecture in the world.

Growing up I was so affected by what was surrounding me, that I could not imagine living and breathing without Art. I wanted to be an artist since I was 4 years old. Alas! Life took me on a spin. In 1999 I moved to the States, completed High School and prepared for a career in medicine in college. It wasn’t too long before I realized it wasn’t for me.

I switched my major to Pre-medical illustration, wanting to learn to draw as realistically as I could. It wasn’t too long that I realized that colleges do not teach you the way of the Masters. I was pushed to experimentation and to abstract the world, to make “conceptual” art that was temporary and decaying. Although I enjoyed doing some of it, it did not satisfy my need to wish to learn to paint like the Masters I grew up with… Caravaggio, Giotto, il Tiziano (Titian) just to name a few. So I gave up, even after being featured in a couple of large galleries, my heart just sunk.

After college I went on to becoming a flight attendant for 8 years, only to become sick with my desire to hold a brush in my hand again. Being always away impeded me to really make any progress with my skills.

In 2014 I took a plunge after paying off my very costly student loans, and with the help of my husband I quit my job to become an artist. However a problem arose. I did not know where to start again. My drawing skills had plummeted and I had no idea what direction to go. I turned my attention to making jewelry, only to realize that it is not where my true desire is. I want to learn how to paint from Rembrandt or from contemporary masters like Mark Demsteader and Steven Assael.

The only thing I could do is start over.

Although I’m getting better, I still need so much guidance. Proper shading and understanding lighting are still a challenge for me, and although I started taking oil painting with the Web Art Academy, I realize that my drawing skills are still not where they need to be.

I think the Drawing Academy course will give me not only a refresh on the basics, but a completely new approach to drawing and understanding lighting and form that I could not get in my training in college. In turn I think it will help me learn oil painting better, and I hope to finally become a self sufficient, thriving professional artist.

I hope people will vote for me, not only because I feel like I have immense potential, but because this is my dream, passion and ultimate desire: to express my inner world on paper and canvas.
